The destruction of Carthage was carried out by the Roman army under the command of Scipio Aemilianus. After a three-year siege, the Romans breached the city's defenses and engaged in brutal hand-to-hand combat with the Carthaginian defenders. The city was then systematically looted and burned to the ground, with the surviving inhabitants either killed or enslaved. The destruction of Carthage was so complete that the Romans famously sowed the city with salt to ensure that nothing would ever grow there again. **
